Girls Lacrosse Wraps Up Their Season by Cassidy Mammay
Looking back on the season the girls lacrosse team had, there were multiple parts of the season that stood out. One of them was when they played John Carroll High School's junior varsity team. Even though Melbourne High School’s girls lacrosse team is a varsity team, playing a junior varsity team gave the newer girls an excellent opportunity to get in on the action. Juniors Gianna Favuzza and Veronica Sawress were both newer to the sport, and were able to show off their skills during the game and make some great memories.
Both of the girls made some great plays during the game, which led to the team winning the game 9-4. Sawress mentioned her assists, which were when she passed the ball to another player, and that player scored a goal. “‘My favorite part of the game was how I gave my team multiple assists that ultimately helped us win,” said Sawress. On a similar note, Favuzza’s favorite part of the game was scoring a goal. “My favorite part of the game was scoring a goal and feeling the overwhelming support of my teammates!” said Favuzza. One thing about the girls' lacrosse team is that they were always there to support each other's wins, big or small.
Scoring goals is normally something done by attackers, which is the offense of the team. Both Favuzza and Sawress mentioned that attack is their favorite position to play. “My favorite position to play is attack because I love trying to fly past the defenders to score a goal,” said Favuzza. Getting past defenders is hard, but it also gives Favuzza something to work towards getting better at. An additional benefit to playing attack is getting to help the team's defense keep up their energy. “My favorite position to play is attack. The reason to this is that it is a huge contributing factor to help us win games and keep defense energized if we keep the ball safe,” said Sawress. While they have different reasons for it, attack is the favored position of Favuzza and Sawress.
When the players are on the field playing their is often a lot going through their mind. Favuzza focuses on staying confident, while Sawress thinks about how happy she is. “As I was playing, I was trying to keep my mind focuses on staying confident and playing the game,” said Favuzza. On the other hand Sawress thought about how happy she was. “Something I thought about as I played was how happy I am I chose to play the sport,” said Sawress. Choosing to play lacrosse made a great impact of Sawress’s life.
There is growth in everything, especially in sports. Having goals to work towards brings more motivation to try. “A goal I have for myself is to is to not stop playing and keep on getting better so that I can hopefully play at the next level,” said Sawress. Sawress mentioned that a future goal is to play in college, and this is the first step at getting their. Favuzza’s main goal is to grow as a player. “My goals for the future are to remain confident, and practice any chance I get to grow as a player and teammate,” said Favuzza.
Playing a junior varsity team allowed for amazing opportunities for Sawress and Favuzza to get in on the field. As they continue playing and getting better, they will get more opportunities to play and thrive as a lacrosse player.
